French Patinated Bronze Bust of the Greek Hero Ajax, circa 1880

About the Item

Grand Tour French, patinated bronze bust of the Greek hero/mythological warrior Ajax (Menelaus) on a socle base, circa 1880. Ajax wears a helmet with battling centaurs in relief and eagles with serpent's tails on the face/visor. Ajax was the son of Telamon, who was the son of Aeacus, and grandson of the Greek God Zeus. 5.75" square base Engraved on base: A LEUR INSTRUCTEUR le lieutenant Bon de SPRIMONT LES OFFICIERS DU COURS D EQUITATION 1882-83 Translation: To their instructor the lieutenant Bon de Sprimont the officers of the Riding Course 1882-83
