About the Item

“My purpose in making this skull is to represent the different types of native maize that since remote times have brought food security to our ancestors, giving them the time to develop the knowledge and arts to the extent they did,” says Mexican ceramist Omar Hernández. Oaxaca’s maize genetic heritage and diversity is now in danger because of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) killing the diversity that once existed. Only a few of the descendants of farmers who started domesticating corn 8,000 years ago in Oaxaca still grow the native corn varieties. This piece is, therefore, an invitation to preserve. -Materials and technique- The cobs are authentic reproductions of non-transgenic maize, most similar to those cultivated in Mesoamerican cultures. By selecting fine white and Oaxacan Donaji clay, Omar creates this empowering piece. Artist Omar Hernández uses natural pigments from soil minerals & oxides (copper & manganese) to decorate each piece. He finds these in the different types of soil near his house in the Central Valley of Oaxaca and in the Mixtec Region on his routine walks. He says, “Sometimes I stop in the highway to collect a bit of soil when I see a beautiful color. We just find each other on the way!” Omar has been preserving Mexico’s unique and treasured native corn varieties for a long time. Origin Made in Oaxaca, México Limited edition of 30 skulls *Due to the handcrafted nature of our products, slight variations enhance authenticity.

Mexican Handmade Ceramic Skull Sculpture Collection Made in Limited Editions

"As a Mexican and Oaxacan, but more as Omar, I see death as something present. It´s something that is a part of life and when you think about death, you begin to value a lot of things. Death is important to me because it’s a constant threat. If you think about dying now, you would probably do things that in another moment you would say, “I’ll do it later.” I see death as an opportunity to live a better life...a continuation of something," says Mexican ceramist Omar Hernández. Omar Hernandez is a Mexican ceramist born and raised in Oaxaca, Mexico. As a child, growing up in a family of potters he didn't have much interest in making pottery, but in his early 20's he realized he could do other things with clay that weren't necessarily utilitarian pieces. It was then that Omar started his skull...
