Puerto Rican Santos De Palo/Wood Carved Sculptures Of Saint Ursula/The Virgins

About the Item

A renowned tradition in Puerto Rico is the making of the Santos de Palo by Masters Carvers since 19th century. They hand carved and painted the saints inspired by their personal religious devotion. This is an early 20th century Puerto Rican Wood Carved Sculptures of Saint Ursula and the eleven thousand virgins by the renowned Puerto Rican craftsman Francisco Pacheco Claudio. Some of his art is on display at the Smithsonian Art Museum. They are dressed with white robes and black crosses. Some of them have a turquoise border decoration in their robes. They are holding candles in one of their hands. They are standing in a rectangular wooden base. The legend stated that Saint Ursula was a British princess who was promised in marriage to a pagan prince. She didn’t want to marry, so she set out this pilgrimage to Rome, Italy with this eleven thousand virgins ( noble maidens and their servants ). On their return through Cologne, France they were martyred by the Huns.
