Puerto Rican Santos De Palos/Wood Carved Sculpture of Our Lady of Mount Carmel

About the Item

A renown tradition in Puerto Rico is the making of Santos de Palos by Masters Carvers since the 19th century. They hand carved and hand painted the saints inspired in their personal religious devotion. This is a 19th century Puerto Rican Wood Carved Sculpture of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. She is the protector of all the seas, fishermen and seamen. This master carver is recognized for the big cheeks in his wood saints sculptures, so they are called “ Cachetones”. She is missing both hands and baby Jesus. Sometimes that happens because they were made individually and then attached to the wood sculpture.
