About the Item

Tom of Finland. Bookend ‘Pekka’ Bookend, painted cast resin, height 12.8 in., base 6 x 6 x 0.8 in. Always Ready to Handle the Heaviest Load - Get Your Books Sandwiched and Add Some Pleasure to Your Life! Tom of Finland’s happy, playful, hyper-masculine drawings provided the template for a proudly gay esthetic in the 1960s, ’70s and ’80s. Called Tom’s Men, the characters he created in his pen and ink illustrations and comics inspired fans to challenge outdated stereotypes and be fully confident, men-loving men. While a Tom’s Man is defined as supremely comfortable in his sexual orientation, his essence is physical: a vigorous, perfectly formed young male. Our Tom of Finland bookends, designed by Daffy London from Tom of Finland’s original artwork, celebrate some of his most iconic figures. Here, we meet Pekka, a robust Finnish working man in boots and cap, the name, ironically, meaning “stone”. The artist: Touko Laaksonen, the boy who would become Tom of Finland (1920-1991), began drawing cartoons at age five. His favorite subjects were the rough manly men of his native Finland. He found success in the Finnish advertising industry but secretly continued creating his increasingly erotic drawings of hyper-masculine men. In 1957 he submitted some drawings to the American magazine Physique Pictorial and the “Tom of Finland” legend was born. By the late 60s Tom’s “dirty drawings” became the standard for gay art, and Tom’s Men a template for a new gay masculinity. Also available: Durk, the ultimate leatherman

Arnold Schwarzenegger, Signed Limited Edition Book with Capitello Bookstand
By Studio 65, Gufram Furniture, TASCHEN, Dian Hanson
Located in Los Angeles, CA
He’s a four-time Mr. Universe, seven-time Mr. Olympia. His films have grossed four billion dollars worldwide. He won the California governor’s race by a landslide. He has one of the most recognizable faces in the world, an oft-imitated accent, and a physique still heralded as the most perfect ever built. He’s Arnold, the one and only, with first name recognition worldwide, and now with a two-volume edition equal to his impressive size and unabashed ego. A decade of collaboration in the making, this photo tribute covers 75 years of Schwarzenegger, from the future Terminator’s impoverished childhood in Thal, Austria, to his rise as a young athlete, his journey to America to become the most celebrated bodybuilder of all time, to his career as the world’s leading action film star, then into the California governor’s mansion and beyond. Along the journey, Arnold’s muscular body, chiseled features, and charismatic personality made him a favorite subject of photographers, including Richard Avedon, Annie Leibovitz, Robert Mapplethorpe, Herb Ritts, Francesco Scavullo, and Andy Warhol. The big book includes them all, while the smaller companion volume gives you more intimate bodybuilding images, behind-the-scenes film stills, dozens of photos from Arnold’s personal archive, and exclusive interviews with Arnold and those who know him best, including directors Ivan Reitman and Bob Rafelson, and bodybuilding legends Franco Columbu, Dave Draper, and Frank Zane. The Capitello edition comes with a unique book stand – a 1:2 scale reproduction of the iconic Capitello chair...
