About the Item

Ceramica bianca invetriata raffigurante il Trionfo di Galatea. La ninfa è raffigurata su un carro a foggia di conchiglia, trainato da tre delfini dalle fattezze di mostri marini; un panneggio le cinge il corpo, mentre con le mani sollevate trattiene un drappo gonfiato dalla brezza marina, aiutata da una sirena alle sue spalle. Alla scena partecipano anche una coppia di amorini, uno a cavallo di uno dei delfini mentre l’altro è appoggiato alle gambe di Galatea, e una divinità marina che sta soffiando in una conchiglia. Le figure sono poggiate sopra a un basamento lavorato a emulare le onde del mare, mentre nella parte inferiore è rifinito da una cornice ornata con motivi fogliacei. È noto un esemplare identico per soggetto e molto vicino nelle dimensioni, conosciuto attraverso la scheda di catalogo ministeriale dove risulta indicato come opera della manifattura di Capodimonte della prima metà del XIX secolo . Il gruppo scultoreo di collezione privata, mutilo in alcuni particolari, è catalogato come La nascita di Venere, mentre a nostro avviso sarebbe più correttamente da identificare come Trionfo di Galatea. Questo soggetto ebbe una grande fortuna a partire dal celebre affresco realizzato da Raffaello Sanzio nel 1512 per la villa Farnesina a Roma, venendo richiesto e trattato numerose volte nei secoli successivi. La nostra ceramica fa riferimento a un filone iconografico che andò diffondendosi a partire dal XVII secolo, con la ninfa adagiata sulla conchiglia, incorniciata dal panneggio svolazzante e accompagnata da figure, in particolar modo quella maschile che usa la conchiglia come se fosse uno strumento a fiato. Il riscontro più pertinente sembra essere quello con un dipinto del Domenichino, conosciuto attraverso un’incisione della prima metà dell’Ottocento di Auguste Jean Baptiste Marie Branchard. La composizione è infatti ripresa puntualmente nella nostra scultura, seppur alleggerita di alcuni personaggi per evidenti motivi pratici nella realizzazione della ceramica. Se sono infatti noti diversi esemplari pittorici come variazioni sul tema, più difficile è ritrovare esempi scultorei che si rifacciano a questa tipologia rappresentativa, che invece fu affrontata dalla manifattura di Capodimonte licenziandone più opere, seppur con qualche lieve modifica, come l’aggiunta del motivo floreale a decorazione del basamento.
