Viennese Bronze, Oriental Beauty On Casket, By F.X. Bergmann, Around 1910
About the Item
A beautiful young woman wearing a softly falling oriental robe, with her hair tied up and adorned with pearl threads and wearing small turquoise-studded necklaces, leaning comfortably on a cushion with tassels on a large, carpet-covered casket with ornamental relief decoration, playing with the fingers of her raised right hand on her headdress.
The figure and carpet are painted in cold colours. The Bergmann company's urn signet is on the side of the cushion, the inside of the casket has a removable wooden inlay.
Excellent and detailed quality of the composition, very lifelike representation, as is typical for Viennese bronze art.

Viennese Bronze Manufactory Bergmann:
Franz Xaver Bergmann (also: Bergman / 1861–1936) was the owner of the Viennese foundry, which produced numerous patinated and cold-painted oriental, erotic and animal bronze figures, some with human features, as well as bizarre and humorous works of art. Known for his detailed and colorful work and the signature either a 'B' in an urn-shaped cartridge or 'Nam Greb' - 'Bergman' in reverse order. These characters were used to disguise his identity on erotic works. His father Franz Bergmann was a professional hunter from Gablonz / Bohemia, who came to Vienna and founded a small bronze factory in 1860. His son Franz Xaver Bergmann inherited the company and opened a new foundry in 1900. Many of the bronzes from the 1900s were still based on designs from his father's workshop.

Franz Bergmann
There were many bronze foundries operating in Vienna in this period, but it was Bergman’s which became the most celebrated, working with a number of celebrated Viennese sculptors at the turn of the 20th Century, such as Bruno Zach, to produce designs for his famous bronze figures. Bergman bronzes are especially famous for having utilised a technique for decorating the bronzes called cold painting. Cold painting as a technique developed in Vienna in the late 19th Century, and involved the application of several layers of paint added to the bronze after firing. It was used to make fashionable collectors’ items. Bergman figures came in three main forms: animal figures, Orientalist sculptures, and erotic figures in the Art Nouveau style. His animal figures were often whimsical and humorous, and often satirical. They have become highly sought-after collectors’ items today. Bergman’s Orientalist sculptures are equally highly sought-after. He was producing these figures at a time when interest in the exotic lands of the Middle East and North Africa was at its peak among Europe’s artists and buyers.
