MAURICE BOUVAL (FRENCH, 1863-1916) FINE ANTIQUE BRONZE SCULPTURE Hunter Stalking his Game, Paris c. 1900, signed "Bouval" in base Impressed w/ Goldscheider foundry mark on edge Item # 1401AKM29PA Of absolutely gorgeous form and exceptional quality, this fine original work by Maurice Bouval captures the naturalistic sentiment of the Art Nouveau school Bouval embodied with perfection. The young man is most minimally clad as he readies his sling, having just spotted game in the distance. A successful day, one large pheasant is already tucked neatly in the thick leather belt wrapped around his waist as he anticipates a larger yield. His sharp facial features remain intense, focused, studying the distance and calculating his shot under a furrowed brow, his wind blown hair wildly furling forward as he blocks the sun from his eyes. The realism and scale of his body is flawless, each aspect in perfect proportion to the following member; his hands capture every detail down to the wrinkles and fingernails, his belt worn and rippling, the leather sling a complex piece that wraps around his wrist before flowing outward with a large rock. The naturalistic base is signed in script "Bouval", the back of the base impressed with the rectangular seal of the Goldscheider foundry beneath a large impressed "A"; the underside of the base is impressed "81 BA 993". Standing at exactly 27 3/4" in height, it is work with a commanding sense of presence. The details throughout the sculpture are above reproach, each aspect carefully hand chased and filed beneath the deep black patina, this with undertones of a very dark green and dark browns. It is a simply stunning work that speaks to perfection in it's exceptional artistry both in sculpting and the foundry process. It is an outstanding antique French bronze sculpture for collectors focused only on investment-grade fine art. Biographical notes: Maurice Bouval was born on the 9th of March, 1863, his family originally from La Coucourde. He studied at the studio of Falguiere while at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris where he was honored with numerous medals. Exhibiting at Salon from 1891 to 1914, he received a bronze medal in 1893 for Child Hunter, a gold medal in 1900 for the work he accomplished in decorating the entrance to the shipping and trade pavilion of the Exposition Universelle, becoming a member of the Societe des Artistes Francais and being elected as an officer of the Academie in 1897 as well as officer of Instruction Publique in 1911. He worked with a number of major foundries, including Thiebaut Freres, Colin and Cie, Jollet and Goldscheider, each producing exceptional casts during his lifetime. His work is highly regarded and well listed in most major discussions of sculptors of the Art Nouveau period. Further Reading and Notes: Benezit, Dictionary of Artists, vol. Sling joint was open when we purchased; we recently had this professionally conserved and just the spot where the joint was opened repatinated (see slideshow for closeups - it is a now invisible repair).
