About the Item

72" tall and round. USA, 1967, Plexiglass. A magnificent six foot architectural scale sculpture by Jim Davis. Jim Davis (James Edward Davis, 1901-1974) was a sculptor and avant garde film maker of the 1940s and 1950s, one of the forefathers of the genre "Lumia" and was close friend and sole film maker of Frank Lloyd Wright. Davis a Princeton graduate of the class of 1923, studied in Paris during the 1920s. His work appeared at MOMA's opening 1932 exhibit at 11 West and 53rd St. Davis's influence touched artists ranging from Laszlo Moholy-Nagy to Stan Brakhage, who dedicated his first film to Mr. Davis. Photographing his sculptures led to his interest in abstract film, his goal was to capture the light and movement created by his early sculptures. Davis, along with Alexander Calder, Joan Miro and Saul Steinberg, was commissioned to create a light sculpture for the Terrace Hotel in Downtown Cincinnati, Ohio by Skidmore Merrill Owings in 1948. Jim Davis sculptures were purchased by Peggy Guggenheim and were installed in the library of Princeton University, where Davis also taught art for many years. This sculpture was a commissioned in 1967 for the West Virginia Building and Loan Association building in Charleston, West Virginia at the behest of the bank president who was married to a cousin of Davis. It is one of the few large-scale sculptures by Davis in existence. Produced from plexiglass, Davis envisioned this object to be illuminated by high powered lamps to cast abstract shapes onto the walls and the ceilings wherever it was hung. Suspension cables keep the three sections correctly suspended in its intended position.
