Antique Bronze Diana of Gabii Sculpture Made & Marked F. Barbedienne & L. Collas
About the Item
Stunning antique bronze of the goddess of hunting, of women and of the moon. She also is a great talking piece.
The original Diana of Gabii is a lifesize marble statue of a woman in drapery which probably represents the Greek goddess Artemis. The original statue is traditionally attributed to the sculptor Praxiteles (circa 400 BC). That original statue was discovered in 1792 by Gavin Hamilton on the property of the Prince Borghese at Gabii, not far from Rome. In 1807, facing financial difficulties, the Prince was forced to sell the statue to Napoleon and it was on display in the Louvre from 1820 and is now conserved there with the inventory number Ma 529. It was there where famous Parisian sculptors recognized the beauty of this ancient piece and this here sizable and stunning bronze sculpture of Diana of Gabii is a perfect copy by Ferdinand Barbedienne and Achille Collas. This amazing bronze sculpture is of the highest quality and detail and, as so often is the case with our antiques, she looks so much better in real life than in any of our photos. With a 'fondeur' like Ferdinand Barbedienne of Paris, you cannot go wrong when it comes to quality, detail and patina and the history of the original marble Diana, made 2500 years ago, makes this sculpture extra special and a great talking piece as well.
