About the Item

A rare and very interesting antique mounted anatomical wax model of a foetus dating from the 19th century. Possibly a medical teaching aid this wonderful and well modelled figure of foetus shows the formed foetus as an unborn baby in a cradled position sucking its thumb and with its legs raised and crossed over and in a sleeping position which it would assume in the womb. The well carved foetus is made from wax with fine red veining to the body, limbs and head and is mounted on a later purpose made metal stand. A wonderful example and a real talking point! Provenance: Acquired from the collection of an academic from the UK Art Market. In good condition with wear associated with age and use.
