Late 1600s or early 1700s palmwood statuette of Mary Magdalene, extremely rare. Over the centuries the ideas about Mary Magdalene and her role in the life of Christ seem to have changed constantly and still are. To us, she stands for the possibility of people from all walks of life to become the best person they can be when living in the presence and proximity of a fully conscious spiritual teacher. The artist who hand-carved this small 'Mary of Magdala' too must have thought of her with great respect, because the quality is exceptional. A Marvelous and Pristine Condition Italian Early Example, Late 17th to Early 18th Century Patinated Bronze Model of Laocoön. This piece is marvelously cast, hand-chassed, and hand-chiseled with the finest detail. The patina is original from the late 17th to 18th century and is still in fantastic condition after about 350 years. This model is after the famous poem written by Virgil, 'The Aeneid'. This story describes the time when the Greeks left a trojan horse as a gift at the gates of the city of Troy. Laocoön then went forth to try and warn the people of Troy of the gift prior to their demise. To protect the Greek people and help destroy Troy, The G-DDESS Minerva, otherwise known as Athena, sent two serpents to destroy Laocoön and take the plan of the Greeks to fruition. This bronze cast exemplifies the moment when the serpents took siege of Laocoön and brought him and his two sons down prior to them warning the people of Troy. The model exemplifies strength, courage, family, love, bravery, and death all within the same cast. This is truly a spectacle of history and one of the earliest models of this subject we have seen in our 5 generations of buying and selling art...
