P.P. Caproni & Brother 'Jeanne d'arc à Domrémy' Cast Plaster after Henri Chapu

About the Item

This cast plaster figure was made by the well regarded firm P.P. Caproni & Brother of Boston, Massachusetts soon after the turn of the 20th century. Pietro Paulo Caproni and his brother Emilio specialized in producing cast renderings of classical, medieval and modern statuary. Company literature stated that Caproni reproductions were modeled after "the choicest subjects in the Museums of Europe", and went on to assert that "The leading Art Museums, the best judges of quality in plaster casts, commend our work as foremost in this country." Caproni pieces are held in the collections of museums and universities including Harvard, Yale and Princeton as well as in Boston's Symphony Hall, whose upper level contains 16 Caproni reproductions. The subject of this early Caproni piece is Saint Joan of Arc, national heroine of France who famously led the French army to victory over the English at Orléans in 1429. The cast plaster figure is after a sculpture titled 'Jeanne d'Arc à Domrémy', executed between 1870 and 1872 by French sculptor Henri Chapu (1833-1891). The work is one of the best known depictions of the so-called "Maid of Orléans" and is held in the collection of the Musée d'Orsay in Paris. The sculpture captures the shepherdess-turned-warrior in a reflective pose as she hears the voices of saints urging her to defend her country in the name of God. The piece has a warm, mottled ecru finish and depicts Joan as a barefoot young woman kneeling upon the ground with her hands clasped and resting on her knees. Her head is turned to the left as she gazes out in the distance with a rapt expression on her face. The piece is beautifully cast with the girl's garment draped across her body in soft folds. Her long hair is covered by a kerchief and falls down her back in a loose plait. This piece was offered by Caproni on page 41 of the 1911 edition of the company's "Catalogue of Caproni Casts." It has an embedded brass label in the base which reads "PP CAPRONI & BROTHER PLASTIC ARTS, BOSTON, MA." and bears the impressed number "2898" on the base at the back. The side of the base is impressed with the name "Chapu". The figure is 9" at its tallest point and is approximately 6.125" in diameter at the base and weighs in at 2 lbs 7 oz. The piece is in good original condition with no restoration and shows appropriate signs of age consisting of minor scuffs and chips to the surface. This piece displays beautifully and would be a great addition to a collection of early Caproni, or works equally well as a stand alone decorative accent.
