Annikki Hovisaari / BOTTLE / Arabia Finland / 1960s

About the Item

Annikki Hovisaari was a Finnish female potter and designer. She studied ceramics at the Central School of Arts and Crafts and from 1949, after graduation, was assigned to the Applied Arts Department at ARABIA, where she studied under Olga Osol and worked on tableware design and painting, while also producing her own one-off pieces on the potter's wheel. In 1962, she was awarded first prize in an international competition in Italy, and from 1963 she was active as an artist in the Art Department until 1975. In the Art Department, she made a number of works with a strong sense of earthy materiality, such as rough chamotte. This is a rectangular bottle from her time in the Art Department and is estimated to have been made between 1967 and 1970, based on the style. The blue, green and black glazes are boldly intertwined with the uneven surface of the earthen material.
