About the Item

During the 18th century, Europeans provided an eager market for Chinese export porcelain, especially the colorful and fanciful ware known as “famille rose.” Named for a palette of opaque overglaze enamels that favored roses and pinks, famille rose porcelain ware was crafted with the same technical virtuosity as imperial porcelain but designed for Western tastes. This lidded baluster jar charms with famille rose decoration of a pair of peacocks nestled within a garden peonies. This combination of motifs conveys the idiom "May you gain culture, wealth and honor," and can also be found on wedding gifts as a symbol of marital bliss. The opposite side of the jar is decorated with a courtly scene of a scholar-official seated on a balcony overlooking others below harvesting lotus flowers by boat. Borders of geometric patterns encircle the base and neck and a ring of auspicious ruyi patterns the lid. Additional Dimensions: Diameter of Opening: 4"
