About the Item

Pair of Monumental Chinese Famille Rose Temple Jars with Gilded Foo Dog Finials, China, Mid-20th Century A vibrant and stately pair of large-scale Chinese polychrome enamel porcelain temple jars, decorated in an elaborate millefleur motif featuring a profusion of pastel-hued blossoms—chrysanthemums, lotus, peonies, daisies, and more—set against a gold-toned ground. Each jar is topped with a domed lid surmounted by a finely modeled and gilded foo dog finial, emblematic of imperial protection and auspicious strength. The baluster form jars are delicately proportioned with high shoulders, flared necks, and rounded bases. The florals are painted in intricate overglaze enamels—predominantly rose pinks, celadons, lavenders, and blues—demonstrating the continued appreciation for famille rose (fencai) decoration well into the modern period. Mark and Age: Each jar bears an apocryphal six-character red Guangxu mark (Da Qing Guangxu Nian Zhi) on the underside, enclosed in a double circle. While this imperial reign mark references the Qing Dynasty emperor Guangxu (1875–1908), the pieces were produced in the mid-20th century, part of a tradition of honoring historical dynasties with tribute marks on later ceramics. This dating is consistent with the quality of enamel, body composition, and decorative style. Dimensions: 29" high x 14" diameter (each) Condition: Good overall condition. Minor expected imperfections from firing, with gentle rubbing to enamel and gilt, particularly on the lids. Moderate wear to base in keeping with age. Provenance: From a distinguished private collection, 3 East 71st Street, New York City. Design Notes: Perfectly suited for traditional, Chinoiserie, or eclectic maximalist interiors. These lidded jars make a commanding decorative statement when placed on pedestals, flanking an entryway, or as anchors for console or mantle displays.

Mid 20th C. Kutani Style French Porcelain Lidded Ginger Jars - A Pair
By Porcelaine de Paris
Located in Morristown, NJ
20th c., a pair of Japanese Kutani style porcelain lidded jars, stamped on Porcelaine de Paris underside of foot. The mark indicates the piece was produced in the 1970's. The jars are decorated in deep orange, tangerine and gold motifs on a white background. On one side, both jars have matching decoration depicting a scroll showing a pastoral scene. On the other side, each jar has a seperate floral depiction; one including bamboo. Both are highly decorative. Founded 1773 by Jean-Baptiste Locre, Porcelaine de Paris, was one of the first manufactures to use the Chinese secret of porcelain. It immediately aimed for the luxury trade, selling to the Royal Courts of Europe. After surviving the French Revolution, Porcelaine de Paris steadily produced tableware as well as purely decorative pieces, receiving orders from all over Europe. Productivity was astonishing, creating one new model every day over 30 years! Around 1830, Jean-Marx Clauss, a German-born potter bought a building at Rue de la Pierre-Levee, where he took over Locre's activity. M. Achille Bloch...

Large Antique Japanese Meiji Period Bronze Floor Vase with Foo Dog Handles
Located in Morristown, NJ
Late 19th/Early 20th c., large Japanese Meiji bronze floor urn. The principal decoration on both sides of the vase is rendered in beautiful and strong relief. Artistry in bronze-work reached new heights in the Meiji period, as a number of metalworking schools developed, creating intricate pieces including vases, sculptures...
