About the Item

19th century French blue Barbotine Jardiniere with stand is a colorful and vibrant example of the amazing pottery that emanated from northern France over the past several centuries. Cast in a classic form, the bottom bells out slightly according to the original designs that enhanced stability. This example survives with its original three legged stand, a separate piece, that features likenesses of Satyrs that accompanied Bacchus in his exploits. The God of mirth, wine and pleasures of the flesh had quite a following at one time, and is still remembered primarily for his love of the grape harvest and of course, wine. Bold grape leaves encircle the form in bas relief, highlighted in green to complement yet stand out from the rich cobalt blue of the background. The colors remain vibrant even after the passage of more than a century thanks to the paint formulas, glazing techniques and kiln work perfected over the course of centuries. Large enough to contain a separately potted plant, it's also a great choice for permanent floral displays. Circa 1880s Measures 17.5 Height x 13.5 in diameter, including separate stand.
