19th Century Bronze Mounted Satsuma Jardiniere

About the Item

19th Century bronze mounted satsuma jardiniere is a splendidly preserved artifact from a wonderful period in French history! The porcelain bowls were meticulously hand-painted in what is today called Satsuma pattern, which was made in and around Kagoshima in Kyushu, Japan in the later part of the 19th century through to the early 1920s. Typical of Satsuma pieces, it was created in a yellow complexion and hand-painted with intricate and minute Japanese figures, landscapes and dragons. The pottery was then shipped off to various European markets. In France, bronze mounts were added to make the pieces even more impressive. Intricate scrolls, dragons with outspread wings, and foliate flourishes forming the feet combine with a rim of fleurs de lys resulting in a magical look. Circa 1880s. Measures 15 H x 21.5 W x 13 D.
