About the Item

This striking bulbous jardinière is a fine example of traditional Japanese Imari ware, likely dating to the late 19th century (Meiji period, circa 1880–1910). Crafted in porcelain, the vessel features a lobed, melon-like form and measures approximately 12 inches in diameter and 7.5 inches high. The decoration is rendered in vivid underglaze cobalt blue and iron red with accents of gilt, depicting flowering cherry blossoms and peonies among rockwork and foliage. The upper rim is encircled by a stylized scroll motif, while the interior is finished in a pale celadon glaze. The unmarked base with an unglazed foot rim and natural wear is typical of Japanese export pieces from the period. Originally designed as a fish bowl or jardinière, this piece would have been paired with a wooden stand and used for decorative planting or display. Richly ornamental and functional, this antique Imari vessel makes a bold statement in any traditional or eclectic interior.
