About the Item

Rare antique parlor set of Japanese Satsuma porcelain and brass Kosmos Brenner oil lamps and jardinière / cache pot / planter / urn. Both are moriage painted with red, orange, gray and white figures and designs. The bases of the ginger jar shaped lamps feature butterfly or bat shaped feet. The jardinière is accented with a pierced rim, slender dragon handles and winged northwind faces for feet. Origin Sazuki. Similar to cloisonné in appearance and design, moriage designs are applied using slip (a clay product) on top of the pottery and then fired. Moriage dates back to the 17th century in Japan and the creation of what is now called Satsuma. In the Satsuma region in Southern Japan there was a burgeoning Korean immigrant population that was producing a variety of pottery at the time. The Satsuma style involved classic vase and pot shapes that were covered in raised designs. These designs were built up using gilt (gold) for a 3D effect that was not easy on the wallet. "Kosmos" was the most popular burner in Europe. While the first patent for the design was lodged in 1865 in the U.K by Wild and Wessel ( from Berlin) the name "Kosmos" started in 1875 and lasted until 1903 when the Company was taken over by Hugo Schneider.
