About the Item

A fine early 19th Century Regency period campana-shaped figured mahogany Cellarette/Jardiniere in the manner of Gillows of Lancaster constructed in solid end grain section, raised on plinth base. (Interior re-lined). The Regency period was an extremely fashionable time for English cabinet making. One of the most prominent companies were Gillows of Lancaster and London. In 1813 Gillows were commissioned by Stephen Tempest of Broughton Hall, North Yorkshire, to make a splendid set of furnishings, a sideboard and a wine cistern being amongst the order. The cistern we have here at the shop is very similar to the example commissioned by Tempest. Gillows made a variety of cisterns in various shapes and sizes. They were made as wine coolers and were found in the dining room. They were popular from the 1770's onwards. See: 'Gillows of lancaster and London' 1730 -1840 by Susan E Stuart
