About the Item

French Art Deco bronze neo-Greek jardiniere/planter France, circa 1920s A striking French Art Deco bronze neo-Greek jardiniere/planter from the 1920s, a substantial and intricately cast sculptural design. Influenced by Grand Tour sculptures, it features a bronze rock-work background with detailed elements: On the front, a fragment of an ancient Greek frieze depicts a bare-chested goddess held by two headless, draped attendants. The right side showcases a portrait of a seated clothed Greek 'Hiereia' (priestess), while the left side features a nude muse, or 'Melopoioi', seated on a cushion, playing a floghera (Greek flute). Resting on a rectangular steel pedestal with four gilt bronze fluted feet, this planter exudes elegance and historical charm. The interior measures 12 inches wide by 6 inches deep by 5.5 inches high, accommodating two later tole planters, each measuring 5 inches square by 4 inches high. While unsigned, the craftsmanship is exceptional, reflecting the Art Deco fascination with classical motifs and luxurious materials. The overall dimensions are 16 inches wide, 9 inches deep, and 10 inches high, making it a substantial piece suitable for enhancing any interior with its unique blend of ancient inspiration and Art Deco styling. This jardiniere/planter not only serves as a functional piece for displaying plants but also as a captivating artistic statement that captures the essence of early 20th-century decorative arts. Overall dimensions 16 inches wide, 9 inches deep, and 10 inches high Planter alone 14 inches wide, 7 inches deep, and 9 inches high The interior measures 12-inches wide x 6-inches deep x 5.5-inches high Two later tole planters 5-inches square x 4-inches high.
