About the Item

A monumental and rare pair of 19th century French dore bronze mounted Sèvres Celeste blue porcelain cachepots. These cache pots are extremely rare to find in this monumental size. Each is hand painted in a celest blue ground with two sides of spectacular panels. The primary panels are of Watteau lovers scenes, one in the summer and the other in the winter. The opposing side is of a gorgeous meadow with rams, fruit and flowers, while the other panel is of a hunting dog who caught a heir and wild birds of game.  The cachepots are further adorned in 24-karat raised gold decoration and are surmounted on circular dore bronze mounts with four square sections with acanthus leaves in high relief. The tops of the cachepots are also dore bronze with open work and double handled with a swirling vine design running from each handle downward to the base. Pieces like these are extremely difficult to fire and preserve in this condition. They usually break due to their sheer weight and constant hand-work before perfection, making these piece even more rare than usual. These pieces were both signed by the artist who completed their painting, a rarity in the Sèvres Porcelain world. France, circa 1840.
