About the Item

A lovely pair of Japanese chakinseki, tea dust, cloisonne jardinieres, Meiji Period, circa 1900, Japan. The jardinieres each with a squat globular body, short neck, and wide, everted mouth. The bodies decorated wide lappets of mottled puce featuring alternating dragons and phoenixes, all against a speckled reddish brown ground. The shoulders of the jardinieres slightly different. One is decorated with scrolling acanthus and orchids on a gold-sprinkled chakinseki ground. The other decorated with chrysanthemum with gold-sprinkled chakinseki foliage against a reddish brown ground. Orchid and chrysanthemum make up half of the Four Noble Ones, Shikunshi, representing the seasons of spring (orchid) and autumn (chrysanthemum). In Japanese culture, the Dragon is a symbol of masculine energy and the heavens, while the Phoenix is a symbol of feminine energy and the earth. Together, they represent balance and harmony. The interiors and underside of the jardinieres enameled a brilliant and deep peacock green. Mouth opening just under 6".
