About the Item

A beautiful example of classic English transferware, this vintage Spode Copeland Italian cachepot features the maker's iconic 1816 ‘Italian’ pattern—rendered here in a striking deep cobalt blue, with scenes of Roman ruins, rolling hills, and grazing animals. Gilded bands around the rim and foot lend an elegant contrast to the rustic countryside narrative, making this piece both functional and decorative. Originally designed to conceal a flowerpot or serve as a jardinière, this cachepot is equally at home as a centerpiece, desk accessory, or shelf accent. The ‘Italian’ pattern has been in continuous production for over two centuries, and pieces from the Copeland period are especially prized by collectors. Spode’s ‘Italian’ pattern is one of the longest-running and most beloved designs in English ceramics, celebrated for its timeless beauty and classical scenery. This particular piece is made more rare and desirable by its gilt trim—a detail not found on all examples—and its Copeland mark, which indicates a production era before Spode became part of the Portmeirion Group. Its combination of historic charm, enduring style, and excellent craftsmanship makes it a worthy collectible—especially for blue and white lovers or admirers of English neoclassical design. This piece has a rich, velvety cobalt hue with beautifully detailed transfer scenes that wrap continuously around the body. The gold accents catch the light gently, adding a refined shimmer without overpowering the pastoral print. It feels sturdy and well-balanced, with a flared rim and rounded foot giving it a graceful silhouette.
