About the Item

A rustic bark pattern or ‘faux bois’ handcrafted coil pot. Unsigned and the period unclear, but I would say 1980s. This substantial pot gives crunchy texture and drenched caramel color. The generous size lends it strong presence, with a lovely, rounded shape and a sense of weight and a grounded, earthy quality. It's clearly been made for floral display, as it's been carefully glazed to the interior and holds a good few pints of water. This highly textured vase goes really well with other pots and contrasts beautifully with smooth objects and polished surfaces. Can also go completely rustic and anchor an outdoor table setting. Very appealing. Note the second taller, brown pot shown in the images for this listing is by the same (unknown) artist and the two work beautifully as a pair. Also of note, this is a rustic pot, hand coiled, imperfectly shaped and has small chips and glaze omissions visible on the surface (see images). These are not very noticeable amid the rough texture. There are no cracks. The vase has been tested, is water fast with a fully glazed interior. Unsigned and no maker stamp.

This wonderful footed earthenware planter can be used as a vase or bowl. It presents as an impressive object in it's own right, or can be used as a plant pot holder. Based on ancient Middle Eastern hand-building and mineral glazing techniques, it has wonderful Organic Modern styling potential, but will also interest those who like ancient pottery and/or the Brutalist aesthetic of the 1970s. It was purchased in the late 1960s or early 1970s from Israel by a dedicated collector of ceramics for use as an Ikebana vessel, and shipped to Australia...
