About the Item

Teeming with male nudes and mythological scenes illustrating stories such as Diogenes' search for an honest man, and Romulus and Remus' role in the birth of Rome, this rare bronze urn was sculpted by Ferdinand Levillain, France's master of bas relief at the turn of the last century. Levillain was famous for his low reliefs in medallic work and finely-detailed bronze objects, and was greatly admired in his day for giving a modern interpretation to Greek and Roman subjects. This stunning gilded bronze urn is literally alive with many scores of nude male figures surrounding eight medallic scenes from Classical mythology. Each and every figure is brilliantly realized, bringing Levillain almost to the level of the great Renaissance sculptors. The urn is marked with the sculptor's name; although there is no foundry mark, Levillain had a strong relationship with the Barbidienne foundry, which probably cast this work.

Large, Substantial Bronze Urn with Mythological Figures in Bas Relief
Located in Philadelphia, PA
Beautifully sculpted and cast, this large and remarkable bronze urn is enlivened with a series of nude mythological figures in bas relief, the dark bronze color highlighted with areas of verdigris, indicating that it sat in an outdoor garden. The figures are superbly modeled, and the relief is high, bringing great drama to the scenes. The figures are clearly inspired by Greek and Roman sculpture...

"Music and Wine, " Lidded Bronze Bowl w/ Greek & Renaissance Motifs, E F Caldwell
By Edward F. Caldwell & Co.
Located in Philadelphia, PA
Made by Edward F. Caldwell & Company of New York, America's most distinguished and lauded maker of fine lighting fixtures and metal decorative pieces in the early 20th century, this lidded bowl of cast and repoussé bronze depicts a series of winemaking scenes on the lid and a frieze of Renaissance angels playing lute and pipes on the bowl below. This piece is rare, and rarer still is the fineness of casting and enameling seen here. The Caldwell company was founded by E. F. Caldwell with Victor von Lossberg in 1895, and before long the company was collaborating with the likes of Stanford White and other prominent architects, supplying lighting and architectural details for a veritable "who's who" of prestigious building projects. Among them: the University Club, Andrew Carnegie...
