Bronze Cup with Race Cars and Motorcycles by Etling, France

About the Item

Rare, perhaps unique, this beautifully sculpted and cast bronze cup features a frieze of racing cars and motorcycles in the heat of the race, above a series of garlands with oaks leaves and acorns, foliate motifs and a fluted base. Signed "Etling Paris," this cup was designed and made by the famed Edmond Etling & Cie firm, which also cast sculptures for Demetre Chiparus and other major sculptors in the 1920s and 1930s. The cup may have served as a trophy for a car race in the 1920s, or as a commemorative piece for a driver, sponsor or car owner.
