1917 Sports Trophy for IC4A by Roman Bronze Works, Two Lap Relay Race

About the Item

This extraordinarily rare -- perhaps unique -- bronze trophy was cast by America's premier art bronze foundry, the Roman Bronze Works in New York City, for the Intercollegiate Association of Amateur Athletes of America, later known as the IC4A, in 1917. Formed in 1876 by delegates from a group of Eastern colleges to showcase field and track athletics, and later swimming and other events, the IC4A was active for many decades. For years it held events parallel with the NCAA, but later it was largely supplanted by the latter group. This trophy may have been a prototype, or cast for the 1917 meeting but never awarded, because the competition that year was cancelled due to the outbreak of World War I. This sculpture is based on the famous "Borghese Gladiator" figure, dating to the pre-Christian era and made in the tradition of the Greek sculptor Lysippos. The bronze figure is mounted on its original mahogany base.
