17th Century Sawankhalok ceramic Shipwreck Jar, Thailand
About the Item
A wonderful example of a Sawankhalok ceramic jar, sourced from a Shipwreck off the Coast of the Indonesian Island of Batam. Batam was one of the most substantial and influential ports in the South China Sea where an abundance of trade was conducted. This jar features natural marine wear and growth from its exposure beneath the sea for hundreds of years which adds to its charm. The jar originates from the Kingdom of Sukhothai, modern day Thailand. It is an iron glazed stoneware jar and features loops that wrap around the Jar’s shoulder. These loops were used to secure the lid to the jar and prevent the contents from leaking.
