About the Item

A Ancient Greek Kylix vase. Campanian ancient Greek red terracotta stemless kylix (drinking cup) with two handles. from the Magna Grecia period. Made between the 350-300 BC in the Greek colonies of the southern Italy peninsula, at Campania. Modeled from red earthenware and finished with glazed blackened pigments. It is embellished in the center with a incised geometric wheel figure and signed in the bottom, with the maker's mark symbol of two concentric circles. Measurements: Have a diameter of 273 mm (10.75 inches), including the handles and raise 57.15 mm (2.25 inches) from the circular base. The Kylix The kylix also known as chalice. Is a typical form of classical Greek ceramics, similar to a chalice and used to drink wine. It has a shallow and wide body with two opposing handles, all raised on a "short vertical foot." The almost flat inner circle on the inner base of the cup, called the tondo, was the main surface for painted decoration on the black-figure or red-figure kylix of the 6th and 5th centuries BC. As the main use of this type of cup was in symposia, they were often decorated with mythological scenes or orgies, which did not become visible until the assistant drained the contents of the kylix. Representations of Dionysus, god of wine, and his satyrs abounded. Greek colonies in Italy Greek presence in Italy began with the migrations of traders and colonial foundations in the 8th century BC, continuing down to the present time. Nowadays, there is an ethnic minority known as the Griko people, who live in the Southern Italian regions of Calabria (Province of Reggio Calabria) and Apulia, especially the peninsula of Salento, within the ancient Magna Graecia region, who speak a distinctive dialect of Greek called Griko. They are believed to be remnants of the ancient and medieval Greek communities, who have lived in the south of Italy for centuries. Condition: The overall condition of this piece is excellent.
