Peru Pre-Inca 1270 AD Chimor Pre Columbian Double Face Vessel In Earthware

About the Item

Pre Hispanic earth ware vessel from the pre-Inca Chimu culture. Beautiful ancient vessel, created in northern coast of Peru around the 900 / 1470 AD. by the Chimu culture. This is a nice early period vessel, carefully modelled from red earth ware with a handle and tall spout. The main body is depicting two male faces in very high relief with headdress, all accented with geometric collars at the base. Chimor, was also known as the Kingdom of Chimor or the Chimú Empire. They maintained the largest and most important political system in Peru before the Inca. The distinctive pottery of the Chimú aids in dating Andean civilization in the late periods along the northern coast of Peru. The political grouping of the Chimú culture centered on Chimor, with the capital city of Chan Chan, a large adobe city in the Moche valley on the present Trujillo city. The culture arose about 900 AD, succeeding the Moche culture, and was later conquered by the Inca emperor Topa Inca Yupanqui around 1470, fifty years before the arrival of the Spanish in the region. This piece have a measurements of 223 mm by 128 mm by 153 mm (22.3 x 12.8 x 15.3 Cm) (8.75 x 5 x 6 inches). Note: The term "Chimú" refers to a rather general art style of the Chimor Kingdom, created on the north coast of Peru between A.D. 900 and 1532. The style is loosely defined because it includes a great deal of regional and local variation Provenance: A private collection in New York city collected in the 1964; T.K. Condition: It is in pretty good stable condition, restored at the handle part with some chips at the bae and at the top of the spout, tiny flea bites and remains of soil. This was created in clay earthenware pottery during the Tang Dynasty period between the 618 and 907 AD. Featuring finely molded patterns with incised and high reliefs of geometric figures. The design consists of the bombe round-shaped jar and a lid with a conical knob, which are decorated in relief with one single layer of finely sculpted 8 lotus petals.
