About the Item
A beautiful leaf-shaped vase with amazing black, matte, 'Mangania' glaze.
Designed in 1955 by Lillemor Mannerheim for Gefle Porcelain Factory in Sweden.
Great condition.
Stamped with makers mark.
Lillemor Mannerheim (1927-1994) was born in Helsinki, Finland’s capital. She studied at Higher Art Industry School in Stockholm from 1945-49. During her free time over the summer months, she further developed her skills at the Arabia Porcelain Factory in Helsinki. From 1950-1952, Lillemor trained in sculptural technique at the Académi de la Grande Chaumiére in Paris.
In 1952, Lillemor returned to Sweden, taking a position at the Gefle Porcelain Factory on the country’s east coast. During the 1950s, she designed era-typical tableware, figurines, and sculptures. In 1957, Lillemor married Count Carl Gustaf Klingspor, with whom she had three children.
Lillemor Mannerheim is perhaps best known for her 1955 series, "M." The series consists of approximately 40 vases and bowls, often with matte-black Mangania glaze. The most spectacular pieces have organic forms and are highly prized by ceramic collectors.
In 1960, Lillemor left the Gefle Porcelain Factory to take a position at Rorstrand. There, she designed animal figurines until 1964. In the 1960s, her husband’s father passed away, and the family moved to Hällekis mansion in western Sweden. During this period, Lillemor worked as a freelance artist, both in furniture and glass design.
In the 1980s, Lillemor returned to her home country of Finland to work for the Arabia Porcelain Factory. There, she designed a much-loved animal series, with all profits going to the WWF.
