Carlo Nason for Mazzega Rare Steel and Glass Sculpture Vase, circa 1960

About the Item

This stunning vase, in steel and Murano glass, was designed by Carlo Nason for Mazzega in 1969. This rare piece has a significant sculptural flair. A masterpiece that blends the mastery of Murano glass with the elegance of stainless steel. The sinuous shapes of the blown glass create a fascinating contrast with the rigid geometry of the steel, giving life to a functional work of art. Created by A.V. Mazzega and named Model S509, the vase is documented in the historical catalogue A.V. Mazzega, No. 9, manufacturer's catalogue, pp. 250-251. This centerpiece represents a safe investment in Italian designer furniture. Versatile in use: perfect as a stand-alone statement or as a sculpture on a console. Dimensions: 13.38 in wide (34 cm) x 12.63 in deep (32 cm) x 11.82 in high (30 cm). About: Carlo Nason (Italy, 1935 - ). Carlo Nason learns to design and craft pieces from the family vetreria. Nason was working with the maestros at his family's company, V. Nason & C. furnace. Although his roots are in Murano glassmaking, he took inspiration from the clean lines and natural colors of the Japanese metal vases he had seen in his youth. Driven by a vision for modern glass lamps, Nason collaborated with his family friend Gianni Mazzega of Mazzega Murano. The 1970s and 1980s marked an era of remarkable creativity for him, as he served as the sole and independent designer at Mazzega Murano. His prolific career extended beyond this partnership, with designs crafted for esteemed lighting manufacturers such as I TRE, Murano Due, and Kalmar. Despite having only a few years of experience as a glassmaker, Nason's talent earned him a place at the Corning Museum of Glass in New York. Though his pieces were showcased under his family's company in the "Glass 1959" exhibition, the designs were unmistakably his own. Moving away from the traditional, vivid Murano aesthetic, Nason remained faithful to his inspirations, creating modern, understated forms that embraced simplicity and a restrained use of color.

Mid-Century Willy Johansson Art Glass Vase for Hadeland Norway
By Willy Johansson, Hadeland
Located in Atlanta, GA
This beautiful art glass vase was designed by Willy Johansson (1921 - 1993) for Hadeland Glassverk, Norway. It is smooth to the touch, but the appearance looks heavily textured with ribs and bubbles trapped in glass. From the Atlantic series, this vase has a cylindrical fluted shape in heavy lead crystal clear glass with deep ribbed sides and internal bubbles in the lower half of the vase. Finely flat ground and highly polished top with an overhang style lip, this art-glass has a nice modernist flair. The vase is signed on the underside and reads Hadeland - WJ. Measurements: 4.75 in diameter (12 cm) x 10 in high (25.5 cm). Note: Willy Johansson was a (1921- 1993) Norwegian glassware designer. Between 1939-42, he studied Statens Handvaerks -og Kunstindustriskole Oslo. His father was at the Hadelands Glassverk, Jevnaker, where Johansson joined the glassmaking workshop in 1936. He was best known for the white rim on his clear or smoked glassware...
