About the Item
This tall Delft Blue vase is a striking example of mid-century Velsen hand-painted earthenware, executed in a refined baluster silhouette that flares gently at the neck and foot while tapering through the body in a continuous, fluid curve. Rooted in the 17th- and 18th-century traditions of Dutch pottery, the form evokes a timeless elegance, reinterpreted here with a distinctly mid-20th-century clarity and precision.
Rendered entirely in cobalt blue on a soft white ground, the decoration is intricate and lyrical. Lush, stylized florals—peonies, tulips, and scrolling vines—surround a central bird in flight, the classic Delft tableau distilled to its essential elements. Every petal and feather is hand-painted with deliberate linework and tonal depth, showcasing the artisanal care and painterly skill that distinguish Velsen’s work. The monochromatic palette pays homage to the earliest blue-and-white Delftware, itself inspired by Ming porcelain, while its crisp graphic quality places it firmly in the postwar decorative arts tradition.
Founded in 1920, the Velsen ceramic workshop remained one of the Netherlands’ last strongholds for truly hand-painted Delftware during the mid-century era. This piece reflects that commitment to traditional methods: no transfers, no shortcuts—just brush, glaze, and the human hand. The artist’s presence is felt in every flourish, from the feathered symmetry of the bird to the dense blooms that wrap the surface.
With its tall, sculptural profile and vivid ornamentation, the vase makes a commanding statement whether displayed alone, anchoring a console, or as the base for a dramatic floral arrangement. It complements traditional, maximalist, and eclectic interiors alike, offering a dialogue between historical craft and timeless design.
Fully signed on the underside with the Velsen mark, painter’s initials, and model number.
