About the Item

These two distinctly shaped Delft-style polychrome vases exemplify the bold, exuberant artistry of mid-century Velsen Delft pottery. One features an elegant elongated baluster silhouette, while the other presents a sculptural double-gourd variation—a form that swells rhythmically at the shoulder and foot. While rooted in Dutch ceramic tradition, these are not strictly revivalist pieces; they reinterpret historical forms with a modern sensibility, both in shape and in palette. What truly distinguishes these pieces is their vibrant polychrome decoration, a hallmark of Velsen’s work during its peak decades in the 1950s and 1960s. Painted entirely by hand, the surfaces burst with richly layered floral motifs, fruit clusters, and perched birds in a sweeping spectrum of color—deep cobalt blue, wine red, mustard yellow, verdant green, lilac, and orange—outlined in inky black for graphic impact. This expansive palette draws from 18th-century Delft polychrome traditions, themselves inspired by Chinese famille verte porcelain and Japanese Imari ware. But Velsen pushed the visual language further, embracing a celebratory chromatic intensity. The effect is both painterly and ornamental, striking a tone that feels joyful, generous, and wholly alive. Founded in 1920 as Potterie Kennemerland, the Velsen factory relocated to Sassenheim during World War II and became one of the few postwar Dutch producers to specialize in hand-painted Delft-style earthenware. These vases represent a defining moment in that legacy—created not as reproductions, but as contemporary expressions of an enduring craft. Though originally intended as decorative showpieces, their scale and sculptural form make them adaptable to a range of interior uses: centerpiece vases on a dining table or console, statement entryway vessels, or even as decorative umbrella stands anchoring a grand vestibule. Their presence is both historic and bold—perfect for collectors of Dutch ceramics or designers seeking a richly colorful anchor for traditional, maximalist, or eclectic spaces. Each vase is signed on the underside with the Velsen mark, along with painter’s initials and model numbers.
