About the Item
This is an old Japanese pottery called Tokoname ware.
The glaze covers half of the piece, so its appearance changes depending on the angle from which you view it.
It's also unique in that the dents and chips that accidentally occurred during firing in the kiln remain intact.
The Tokoname kilns, which produced the greatest volume of all the medieval kilns, played a leading role in the production of unglazed wares in those times, exerting tremendous influence on the manufacture of unglazed ceramic wares all over the country.
Founded in the early twelfth century in the northern and central parts of the Chita peninsula on the coast of what is now Aichi prefecture, the kilns were heir to the technology of the Sanage kilns. The rough, iron-rich clay can be well-fired at relatively low temperatures and is suited to production of both narrow-necked and wide-mouthed jars (tsubo and kame). And these were the items, along with mortars (hachi) that the Tokoname kilns mainly produced, as did the other kilns specializing in unglazed, high-fired ware, responding to demand all over the country for storage vessels for fertilizer, grain, as well as water. Carried overland or by sea, they were taken far to the north to Aomori and to the south to Kyushu.
In this era when agricultural production dramatically increased to become the basis of the economy through advances in farming technology, surely these jars played an important supporting role.
*There are signs of repaired cracks. Therefore, if you fill the vase with water, it may leak. If you plan to display flowers, fill the vase with water in a separate container and then place it inside the vase.
