Japanese Art Glass Sculptural Vessel by Kyohei Fujita

About the Item

A free standing glass sculpture in an open vessel form by Kyohei Fujita (1921-2004). The striking piece features an organic body with alternative strips of blue, white and transparent strips with gold sparkle inlays. The rim takes a free biomorphic form that resembles bone structure. It is etch signed underneath. The vessel was made in the earlier period of the artist's career before he dedicated most of his work to the "magical box", for which he was most famously known. The sensibility of the piece and the techniques employed date the piece to 1960s-1970s, as the vessel appears informed by both blowing glass in Murano where the artist frequently visited, as well as the gold inlay inspired by Japanese Rimpa school, which was prominently featured in his later glass boxes. A vessel of a similar form in blue color with gold sparkle inlays (dated to 1964) was in the exhibition "The Glass Art of Kyohei Fujita Contemporary Tradition" in 2016 at Toyama Glass Art Museum (see the last photo here). Another similar piece in the form of bowl dated 1979 is illustrated on page 80 (last photo) in the book “The world of Kyocera Fujitsu: a 70th Birthday Commemoration”.

Japanese Tall Fine Antique Yellow Dragon Trumpet Vase, 29 Inch
Located in South Burlington, VT
Japan, an exceptionally tall 29" antique monumental monochrome amber yellow crackle glazed dragon vase with a dramatic and impressive "curling dragon" wrapped around its stem. It was crafted by the master artisans of the Japanese southern Awaji Kiln, from the late Meiji to Taisho period (1910-1920). The impressive porcelain vase crafted in a tubular modernist form with an original amber yellow glazed finish and with an applied curling dragon sculpture. It is unsigned as many normally were from that period and is in original condition with normal kiln origination surface creation imperfections. Dimensions: 29 inches tall and 9 inches diameter top and with an 8 inch diameter base Provenance: private New England collection.
