Japanese Antique Wooden Mask "Hyottoko" / 19th to Early 20th Century
Located in Sammu-shi, Chiba
Japan has a culture of masks since ancient times, and they are sometimes used in Shinto rituals and temple events. This mask called "Hyottoko" also has a long history. Although there is no clear document, it is thought that this "Hyottoko" existed after the 9th century. "Hyottoko" is a male mask with a puckered mouth. "Hyottoko" often appears as a clown during dances and dances at festivals. There is also a theory that the origin of "Hyottoko" is modeled after a man who blows fire from a hearth with a bamboo tube. He has a funny face and his face is distorted and has a very funny expression. I think this mask, which also appears in the Japanese anime...
