Japanese Imari Baluster Vase, Meiji Period, Late 19th Century, Japan

About the Item

A lovely tall Japanese Imari porcelain baluster vase with images of Chinese boys, Meiji Period, late 19th century, Japan. The tall vase of baluster form, with a short, slightly splayed foot, tall body, narrow shoulders, and a short, wide neck with slightly everted mouth. The vase is decorated in the typical imari color palette of blue, orange and gold gilt. Four large reserves against a cobalt blue and gilt ground decorate the body. Two feature groups of Chinese style boys playing under a large pine tree in a fenced garden setting surrounded by blooming peony and plum. The other two reserves decorated with a large spray of flowers and foliage within a tall imari vase, creating an interesting visual of an imari vase depicted on an imari vase. The underside with an unidentified mark in iron red. There are a small series of pinholes and associated star cracks along the surface of the glaze, indicating the vase may have been mounted at one point. The holes and cracks are only to the surface of the glaze, and do not reach the porcelain below.
