About the Item
A large 18.25" diameter Japanese Imari porcelain charger, Edo to Meiji Period, mid 19th century, Japan.
The large charger of near flattened form and decorated in the typical Imari palette of underglaze blue with red, orange and green overglaze enamels and gilt highlights.
The design is centered on a roundel with a dense design of scrolling peony blossoms and leaves in underglaze blue. Two large pictorial reserves of Shinto priests performing blessings in a fenced garden setting. A large tray of sacred objects is set to one corner, while fantastic trees and flowers bloom overhead and in the background.
The reserves are separated by a wedge shaped reserve with an abstracted dragon against a red ground, and a scrolling floral pattern against a blue ground.
The rim of the charger decorated with reserves of phoenixes in flight against a red ground, separated by brocade patterned reserves.
The backside of the charger is boldly decorated with three large branches. Each branch with a single peony blossom to the center, and a peach to the side.
