Japanese Scholar's Object

About the Item

This natural gourd was sliced at the top, hollowed out, and lacquered in black inside, around the rim, and on the bottom where it was signed by the artisan with Chinese and Japanese characters. As a "scholar's object" it would have been placed on a desk, along with a scholar's rock, and other artfully presented natural specimens.
