About the Item

Artist/Designer; Manufacturer: Sydney K. Hamburger (American, b. 1935) Marking(s); notes: no marking(s) apparent Materials: ceramic Dimensions (H, W, D): 35"h, 14"dia Additional Information: Provenance: Artist / Private Collection, Trenton, NJ. This large-scale ceramic floor vessel by American artist Sydney K. Hamburger (b. 1935) reflects a distinctly biomorphic approach influenced by 1950s abstract expressionism. Standing 35 inches high, the piece functions as both sculpture and vessel — its form organic, gestural, and evocative of the natural world. Hamburger’s work embraces the irregular, the asymmetrical, and the expressive — qualities often aligned with the aesthetics of wabi-sabi and organic modernism. While relatively obscure, her pieces have been acquired by public and private collections including the Wurlitzer Foundation, Easton Academy of the Arts, Chesapeake College, and the Talbot Bank. Her work can be seen in conversation with that of artists such as Peter Voulkos, John Mason, Magdalena Suarez Frimkess, or even Ruth Duckworth — studio ceramicists who explored clay as a medium for abstraction and scale.

Large Mid-Century Modern Stoneware Bottle Vase in the Style of Peter Voulkos
Located in Studio City, CA
A wonderful, richly multi-glazed and textured, heavy Mid-Century Modern large stoneware bottle vase. Expertly crafted. The piece is very reminiscent of some of Peter Voulkos' early hand-painted works with traditional shaped vessels, though we believe it was made by a different artist. From a Los Angeles estate that featured many well know Mid-Century and California artists' pottery pieces, artworks, and furniture. Marked "BOT 2" on the underside. Would be a great addition to any Mid-Century pottery/ceramics collection...
