Mark V. Marshall Doulton Lambeth Art Nouveau/Gothic Revival Vase

About the Item

An impressive, large Doulton Lambeth vase made ca. 1885-1900 by Mark V. Marshall, assisted by Florrie Jones. Mark V. Marshall’s vase fuses and contrasts Medieval Gothic art with Belle Epoque Art Nouveau design. The 19th-century Gothic Revival movement sought to correct the decline of social standards and morals by introducing into design the characteristics found in Gothic Christian art, seen here in the coiling dragons around the neck. The body, taking after the Belle Epoque Art Nouveau movement, heralds “art for art’s sake,” valuing aesthetics over materials and creating a sumptuous and precious exterior more akin to a polished gemstone. The base has the impressed lion and crown stamp, impressed number '6264' and printed 'ART UNION OF LONDON.' Marshall's signature is incised 'MVM' on a dragon on the body of the vase. Florrie Jones's initials FJ are incised on the base. Condition: Excellent. Dimensions: 16 1/2 in. H x 6 1/4 in. Dm (42 cm H x 15.9 cm Dm).

  • Red Wing Pottery Mid-Century Modern Vase
    By Red Wing Pottery 1
    Located in Fort Lauderdale, FL
A Red Wing Potteries light pink vase, made circa 1950. In the years after World War II, Western makers approached their designs with a spirit of optimism and dynamism. The mid-century modern style was a result of that energy, incorporating organic, clean lines into industrial design. This ‘Gladiolus’ vase, made by the Minnesota stoneware factory Red Wing Potteries, is a fine example of the mid-century modern pottery being produced in America. The vase, produced between 1955 and 1960, encapsulates mid-century modern design: a sinuous form with subtle references to nature, the sculptural presence of a decorative object, and, of course, a Zephyr pink glaze. Dimensions: 12 in. H x 11 3/4 in. W x 3 1/8 in. D (30.5 cm H x 29.8 cm W x 7.9 cm D) Condition: Very good. A couple minor chips to base, the largest measuring 0.4 cm. Literature: Ray Reiss, Red Wing Art...
