About the Item

The two vases of ovoid form, the Lithyalin glass bodies canted with flared necks and bases, supported by scrolling ormolu mounts to the sides and bases The fine pair of vases attributed to the Saint Louis Glassworks (French, f. 1767) Lithyalin glass is an opaque or translucent marbled glass with a surface resembling polished gemstones in a wide range of colors. It was first made by the chemist Friedrich Egermann (Bohemian, 1777-1864) in 1828 in northern Bohemia, and he patented the process in 1829. When this patent expired, similar pieces were made in France, Bohemia, China and Russia. More of a period than a specific style of design, the European Belle Époque began in the late 19th Century and continued until the outbreak of the First World War in 1914. The period was, in fact, given its name after World War One, as it was felt to be a Golden Age in contrast to the horror of the war. The Belle Époque was emblematic of an optimistic time, when arts, technology, science and cultural innovations were encouraged and flourished. The art and design that emerged from the period is typified by the sense of freedom and pleasure that it evokes.

Pair of French Louis XVI Period Gilt Bronze and Agate Vases
By Martin Baffert
Located in London, GB
These truly exceptional and rare antique Louis XVI period vases have been sculpted from agate, a precious and highly sought-after stone. The vases are set on square agate bases with gilt bronze laurel wreath socles. The burgundy and claret agate bodies of the vases are mounted with gilt bronze acanthus leaf ornamentation, and twin lion masks joined by draped swags above. The lids of the vases are mounted with gilt bronze, surmounted by pine cone finials. The vases' design is attributed to the late 18th century, French clockmaker Martin Baffert. Baffert worked with a number of Parisian bronziers including Jean-Nicholas Fremont, Nicolas-Guillaume Jourdan and Francois-Robert Leguel, who assisted in the creation of his designs. This pair of vases is very similar to another pair of vases which Baffert designed, which form part of a clock garniture currently in the Rothschild collection at Waddesdon Manor. The Rothschild vases...
