About the Item

A pair of 19th-century French ormolu-mounted Sèvres-style vases signed by H. Picard. Henri Picard was a prominent Parisian bronzier active during the second half of the 1800s, supplying mounts to the royal household and collaborating with leading porcelain manufacturers. His workshop was particularly known for producing elaborate ormolu fittings for clocks, candelabra, and porcelain-mounted garnitures such as this pair. Both vases are stamped “H. PICARD” on the underside of the mounts, confirming the attribution. The porcelain elements exhibit the characteristic céleste blue ground and hand-painted reserves in the style of Sèvres, with jeweled accents and finely tooled gilding. Each vase is of ovoid form with a fitted domed lid and stands on four outward-scrolling legs that are attached to a a circular base with four projecting rectangular panels at the cardinal points. The base is cast with a molded edge and acanthus elements at each junction point. The domed lids are surmounted by pinecone-form finials and encircled with bands of applied beading and stylized foliate details. Two wingless putti in full relief are seated on the shoulder of each vase, facing outward and holding an elaborate scrolling framework that encircles the central reserves. This gilt bronze framework consists of acanthus scrolls terminating in berried leaf rosettes, which are joined at the top and drop downward into swags along the vase’s circumference. The mounts are crisply chased, with consistent detailing across all applied elements. The porcelain ground is a deep céleste blue, enriched with raised, tooled gold in stylized floral and scroll motifs, interspersed with small white and red enamel jewels. Each vase displays two oval reserves on opposite sides, bordered by a red-jeweled oval band and the cast ormolu framing. The hand-painted scenes are rendered in polychrome enamel and depict 18th-century pastoral and romantic imagery (Watteau scenes). One reserve features a man and woman in a wooded glade, the man leaning down toward the seated woman who looks upward, while a goat stands to the side. The second reserve shows a couple seated in a flowering garden, the man offering a bouquet as the woman reclines on a stone bench near a cottage. On the reverse of the first vase is a rustic rural scene with a small house near a river, trees flanking the background, and mountains beyond. The reverse of the second vase shows two children in period attire, seated on stone steps beside a fountain ruin, the boy gesturing toward the distance as the girl holds a flute. Each scene is carefully painted with subtle shading, detailed facial expressions, and atmospheric perspective. These vases reflect the revival of Louis XV and Louis XVI taste popular during the second half of the 19th century, especially in their use of Rococo-inspired ormolu mounts, figural decorations, and romanticized subject matter. The céleste blue ground and applied jeweled enamel are directly influenced by 18th-century Sèvres porcelain, which remained a standard of decorative excellence in French interior design. Such pieces were produced for elite clientele and exhibited at salons and world fairs during the period. The signed Picard mounts contribute significantly to the value and desirability of the pair. His workshop was known for its high-quality chasing and fire gilding, often commissioned by important manufacturers and private clients. The level of detail in the ormolu, from the expressive modeling of the putti to the complex interlacing framework around the reserves, demonstrates precision in casting and finishing. Combined with the finely painted porcelain and richly colored ground, the pair represents a complete synthesis of late 19th-century Parisian decorative arts production.

Sèvres Porcelain Garniture, Mounted in Gilt Bronze by Picard
By Henri Picard, Manufacture Nationale de Sèvres
Located in London, GB
With its delightful painted representations of the four seasons and bacchanalian scenes, this ‘bleu celeste’ garniture demonstrates the technical excellence of Sevres factory porcelain. On top of this, the porcelain vases are beautifully decorated with gilt bronze (ormolu) mounts, expertly cast by Henri Picard, the manufacturer and gilder to Emperor Napoleon III. This garniture is comprised of a central jardinière and a pair of flanking vases. The jardinière features a wide porcelain body, which is topped by a gilt bronze guilloche-patterned neck. This is fitted with two geometric handles, which terminate in cherubs masks. The jardinière body is finely decorated with a continuous painting of putti playing together in a woodland setting. One putti holds the pinecone-tipped staff carried by followers of Bacchus (or Dionysus), the god of wine and ecstasy. Several putti ride on a goat, led on a harness by other putti. This painting is edged with jewelled and parcel gilt decoration, set against a bright ‘bleu celeste’ ground. The jardinière stands on a shaped gilt bronze stem, its top encircled by a band of stiff leaves, its middle by a laurel wreath, and its foot by beading. The jardinière is placed on a square gilt bronze plinth, which is decorated with grape-form finials, hung draperies and foliate motifs, and is set on four beaded toupie feet. The pair of vases are similar to the jardinière in their design. They feature ovoid ‘bleu celeste’ porcelain bodies, which are decorated with continuous paintings of the four seasons, within gilt and jewelled frames. Winter is depicted in a scene showing putti huddled together on a sleigh in a snowy landscape, and autumn by cherubs reaping crops with a sickle. Spring is shown by cherubs wearing flower wreaths and dancing while holding garlands, and summer by putti picking grapes and drinking wine. The vases’ bodies are topped by pointed gilt and jewelled ‘bleu celeste’ porcelain lids, crowned by gilt bronze grape finials. Like the jardinière, the vases are fitted with gilt bronze cherub...
