Ruscha Art Brown Ceramic Vase, Mid-Century West German Pottery
About the Item
Striking vintage vase features complex espresso brown glaze with sgraffito decor on the front of the vase. Abstract botanical decor follows the unusual demi-lune shape of the piece; the sgraffito is accented with thin, tasteful gold brushstrokes that bring out the subtle metallic elements of the background glaze. Minimal, sculptural shape of the vase is attributed to Kurt Tschorner, who created multiple asymmetrical, organic-inspired vessel shapes while working as a freelancer designer for Ruscha from 1954.
The vase is stamped on the bottom with the model number (h-7); it retains the manufacturer's paper sticker on the front.
Ruscha was founded in 1948 by Rudolph Schardt; the factory closed in 1996. Cilli Wörsdörfer was responsible for the art pottery section in the early 1950s, producing some of Ruscha's famous designs, such as Zebra and Milano. Otto Gerharz, the production director from 1951, contributed to the development of new, creative glazes, including the famous vulcano glaze that influenced the move towards dripped glazes in West German pottery. Kurt Tschörner (1912 - 1987) created most of the shapes in 1950s-1970s; other designers included Ernst Borens (1958-61), Hans Welling (mid 1950s), Adele Bolz (1959-60), Heinz Siery (1960s and 70s), and Jutta Johanni (1970s).
Ruscha used a mixture of incised and embossed marks; unlike other West German ceramic studios, where the form number indicates the height of the piece, Ruscha’s different forms had different sized version indicated by a single number. Items were never marked Germany or West Germany; some series were labelled with a letter prior to the form number such as R, G, B, H, L, K and S.

His first furniture collections were inspired by traditional Art Deco and Biedermeier styles interpreted through a modern lifestyle demands. Stepping away from merely utilitarian view of everyday objects, his recent collections are filled with meaningful textual context while incorporating traditional and modern woodworking techniques. Roman is using practical function as a common denominator to create emotionally charged art objects, blurring the boundary between art and function. While appreciating possibilities of ordinary materials, Roman is developing new mixed media multilayered composite varnishes and utilizes decorative gilding and mica veneer to actively engage ambient light, giving an additional aspect to relation of his objects to their environment. The decision to work in custom format was based on environmental concerns and opposition to culture of mass production and pure consumerism. The choice of materials was heavily influenced by sustainability and environmental concerns. All objects are made locally in the Brooklyn Navy Yard workshop. Elimination of storage and transportation needs for mass-produced furniture in lieu of creating a custom made objects on demand allows us to reduce waste of materials and energy.
