About the Item

A very attractive 1970s glass vase, hand blown. It sits in the style of Scandinavian glass of the 1970s period, especially with reference to the work of Erik Hoglund, though it could be from any of the Norwegian, Danish or Swedish, or indeed Italian, glass makers of this period. It has a good heavy quality, thick glass, clearly handled with care and skill. I would excluse Empoli due to the heaviness of the glass. I'd exclude Mexico because of the considered and refined period shape - the vase reminds us of 1970s brutalist work. In particular it has similarities to the work of Benny Motzfeldt (1909 - 1995) for Randsfjord Glassverk. The subtly graded Crimson ombre neck with grey glass swirls and free bubbles are reminiscent of her work but this is not an attribution. It simply reminds us of that period and style of naturalistic, brutalist glass-making. The vase has a straight-sided shape with a low foot and ground pontil. It's unsigned. Just a jolly nice piece of glass blowing, including a lovely shape and colour.

Monumental Signed Shunichi Inoue White and Rose Ash Glazed Vase 1978
By Shunichi Inoue
Located in Melbourne, AU
An exceptional example of the work of master Japanese potter, Shunichi Inoue. This vessel dates from his Australian residency and is signed and dated 1978. There is potency in this very simple form - it has a powerful Cynthian presence, stillness, composure, that is, it is reminiscent of the calm abiding presence of the moon. Shunichi Inoue studied ceramics at Kyoto City University of Arts 1969-75. He travelled to Australia to lecturer in ceramics at the Bendigo College of Advanced Education in Victoria, Australia where he stayed for three years. He returned to Australia in late 1984 as a visiting professor and again in 1993, when he made an extended stay. He was an active exhibitor and had an important influence on Australian pottery...
