Description
A superb and generously proportioned Portuguese silver tray, masterfully crafted by Leitão & Irmão, Royal Silversmiths, in Porto between 1887 and 1937. Executed in 833 fine silver, the tray rests on four elegant feet and features a beautifully contoured serpentine rim with a finely pierced gallery edge and integrated handles at each end.
The surface is engraved with delicate neoclassical motifs, including a central medallion framed by garlands and symmetrical foliate scrolls, characteristic of the transitional aesthetics between late 19th and early 20th-century Portuguese decorative arts.
This piece bears clear and well-struck Portuguese silver hallmarks, including the “Javali II” punch (used from 1887 to 1937 for 833 purity), the Porto city mark, and the maker’s stamp for Leitão & Irmão, one of the most prestigious Portuguese silversmiths, known for their work for the Portuguese royal family.
Condition
Excellent antique condition. Minor surface wear and faint scratches consistent with age and use. Hallmarks are clearly legible.
Notes
A rare and collectible work of Portuguese silver craftsmanship, this piece represents the height of luxury production in the early modern Portuguese decorative tradition. A statement piece for any refined silver collection or neoclassical interior.
