About the Item
A finely cast and vividly enameled brass dish in the form of a stylized fish by Mexican designer Pepe Mendoza (active mid-20th century). Measuring approximately 7 inches wide, the sculptural form is executed in heavy cast brass, the surface inlaid with characteristic cloisonné-style enamel work in deep oceanic shades of turquoise, cobalt, and emerald green, arranged in a geometric scale pattern. The use of jewel-toned enamel, typically applied using a cold enamel or champlevé technique, is distinctive of Mendoza's studio, which was known for blending Pre-Columbian design elements with a refined, modernist sensibility.
This piece bears Mendoza’s standard impressed foundry mark to the underside, reading: “MENDOZA, PAT. 159413, MAYO 7–1959, HECHO EN MEXICO,” and also carries the design patent number. While smaller in scale, the dish exemplifies the sculptural ethos and decorative versatility of Mendoza’s work, which ranged from furniture hardware to tabletop objects. His studio was particularly prolific during the 1950s and 1960s, supplying hardware to design houses such as Eugenio Escudero and collaborating with leading architects and decorators of the Mexican Modern movement.
This fish-form dish, with its playful yet refined stylization, is representative of Mendoza’s output during this period and serves as both a decorative object and a small functional tray or catchall. Works by Mendoza have become increasingly sought-after for their bold color palettes, strong biomorphic forms, and association with the golden age of Mexican modern design.
